MEDIA ADVISORY | APRIL 3, 2002

Big Media and Congress Won't Stop Pervasive Video
-- Jack Powers NAB keynote

Music labels and movie companies want to control the digital revolution, but pervasive video can't be restricted by copy protection schemes, encryption software or draconian laws like the proposed Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act. Broadcasters should embrace the new channels of "content everywhere" -- on the Internet, portable DVDs, pocket computers, car computers, signs and cell phones -- and make their brands friendly to an emerging digital world in which the consumer is in control.

That's the message of tech strategist Jack Powers' keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters Convergence 200 conference in Las Vegas next Tuesday, April 9 at 2:00 pm.

"Right or wrong, there's no way to stop digital distribution. But for broadcasters, pervasive video is a natural business evolution," Powers said. "Music and movie producers limit their audience to customers who pay for play. Broadcasting is about getting the signal to the widest audience possible." Although broadcasting operations are often owned by big media firms that also produce records and films, he added that broadcasters have more varied revenue streams that include advertising, sponsorships, subscriptions and even per-inquiry transaction fees.

In Las Vegas, Powers will describe the new video environment spurred by broadband Internet, the latest advances in consumer electronics, and a youth culture quite comfortable with digital computing. He will discuss the role of broadcasters, cable companies and content firms and offer five maxims for prospering in the era of "content everywhere."

Later this month, Jack will expand on the theme of pervasive content in his Artificial Intelligence Forum at Internet World Spring in Los Angeles April 22.
