TV Takes Over: Pervasive Video and the Future of Computing, Communications and Culture

NEW YORK, NY -- 9/30/02 -- The moving image is taking over our future, and new video technologies are pushing TV even further into the fabric of our daily lives. Media technologist Jack Powers describes what he calls "pervasive video" in a new seminar and panel discussion at Penton Media's Streaming Media East 2002 conference on October 2 at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center.

"Home TV is one small part of the video story," said Powers. "Look for video in your office, on your desktop PC, on your cell phone and pocket computer, in your car, on billboards and store signs, built into your eyeglasses, projected onto buildings and even stamped onto packaging on store shelves." He noted that technical developments like "roll-up" video screens, ultrawide bandwidth (UWB), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and artificial intelligence are converging with cultural and commercial forces like media conglomeration, real-time business initiatives, information overload and a new tech-savvy generation to make the TV screen the preeminent page of the electronic society.

"The pervasive video revolution is not all good, but it's not all bad, either," said Powers, who began his career in the newspaper business and has written several books about communications and computing. "The more electronic we get, the more video we'll see, and we'll be discussing the technological, commercial and cultural implications in our new Streaming media East conference sessions.

Jack Powers is director of the International Informatics Institute, a New York high tech research and education center. For more information about Pervasive Video and Jack's other Streaming Media East and Internet World Fall seminars, visit the institute's web site at: http://in3.org.
