Jack Powers Launches HealthcareNBIC.org Covering Disruptive Innovations in Healthcare

-- Web Log on Healthcare Developments Examines the Convergence of Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Information Technology and Cognitive Science

-- Veteran Analyst Jack Powers Serves as Executive Editor

NEW YORK (Business Wire) -- The International Informatics Institute (IN3.ORG) marked the official launch of HealthcareNBIC.org, a web log covering "disruptive innovations" in healthcare. IN3's director Jack Powers edits the coverage of new science, technology and business models that shake up the traditional medical system, changing our healthcare expectations and giving patients more control over their care.

"In a world of Amazon, eBay, cell phones and Federal Express, our medical system is stuck in the mid-1980s: paper forms, top-down hierarchies, unreachable bureaucracies, secret pricing, chains of disconnected specialists," Powers said. "We expect a lot more service and accountability these days, and the medical community will have to provide it."

He described the revolution in consumer-directed healthcare that makes patients highly aware of the cost and quality of their medical services. "Companies are cutting back on health benefits with higher deductibles and co-pays, tighter controls on acceptable providers and the implementation of new Health Savings Accounts," he added. "The change in how we pay for healthcare is unleashing the 'shopping monster' in all of us, pushing us to demand better service at lower prices."

In addition to editing HealthcareNBIC.org, Powers is conference chairman of the Health Innovation and Convergence Summit, a new conference on disruptive innovations in healthcare slated for January 23-25, 2006 in New York. (http://healthicsummit.com) The Summit brings together scientists, technologists and business leaders to analyze the coming innovations in stems cell research and regenerative medicine, new models of patient care and medical informatics.
